GAP, Stella McCartney,  L’Oréal and Amazon are among the 28 businesses that have pledged to take action to address gender inequality in the work place in the US.

The Equal Pay Pledge, which was taken at the White House’s first United State Of Women Summit yesterday, commits private-sector companies to regularly review their strategies to reduce the pay gap and improve gender parity within their organisations, according to information from the White House website.  The measures include annually analysing their salary policies and assessing how fair their practices of hiring and promotion are.

In a statement to the White House, a representative of Gap wrote, “When we pay our employees fairly and treat them with dignity and respect, they are inspired to be their best, which in turn helps us deliver better products and experiences to our customers. And when our business succeeds and grows, we can become a stronger voice for equality and inclusion around the world. We believe pay equality should not be an accomplishment; it’s the way the world should work and it’s time to get it done.”
