For the longest time, Khloé Kardashian and her sisters admittedly “had no idea” what they were doing.
In a new blog entry on her app, Khloé opened up about the real story behind her sisters’ famous clothing boutique, DASH.
According to the 31-year-old, Kourtney [Kardashian]forced her to start working there as a way to stop her from “partying all the time, drinking a lot and sleeping in every morning.” Though the store wasn’t making any money, the girls stuck by it by studying up on business books — really! — and turning to friends for help.
“We started DASH in 2006 and really struggled for a long time to make it a successful business—there were months we couldn’t pay our bills, and the store didn’t turn a profit for years,” Khloé wrote. “After my dad died in 2003, I was partying all the time, drinking a lot and sleeping in every morning. At this time, my mom and Kourtney were running their kids store Smooch, and when the space next door opened up, Kourt got it!
“She saw that I was spiraling and wanted to give me responsibility and a reason to wake up in the morning, so she told me I was going to help her run her new store. Kourt, Kim[Kardashian] and I were the only employees and really had no idea what we were doing,” she continued. “We went to Barnes & Noble, bought business books, and asked our friends for advice. We put everything on Kourt’s credit card—we literally had no money. The three of us bought all our own inventory, cleaned the store, did our own taxes—everything.”
Khloé said she saved up money by living with Kourtney in an apartment down the street from the store. As they “didn’t own any cars” at the time, they had to walk to work or “get rides from our friends.”
“We didn’t make any money, and it was really scary,” Khloé, whose net worth is now estimated at $20 million, recalled. “Everything went into DASH, but we were really determined and kept working at it to get where we are today. Eventually, it paid off. People think that my sisters and I didn’t have to work for our money, but we did!”
“It was really important to my dad that we knew the value of hard work and took responsibility for our own success,” she added. “I think my dad would be really proud of us.”
