Directed by David Ayer (Fury), Suicide Squad is the rare superhero movie that makes the villains the heroes. Those villains are – big deep breath – ace marksman Deadshot (Will Smith), former-psychiatrist-turned-lunatic Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), assassin Boomerang (Jai Courtney), fire-summoner El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), reptilian misery Killer Croc (Adewale Akkinuoye-Agbaje), martial artist Katana (Karen Fukuhara) and rope-expert Slipknot (Adam Beach).
Joining them is Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, their handler who makes sure they don’t go rogue, working under government official Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who has assembled the team of villains to stop even worse villains, because nobody knows baddies better than other baddies.
The first person the Squad is dispatched to apprehend is Cara Delevigne’s Sorceress, a feral magically-powered being, and then the big one, Jared Leto’s Joker. Ayer has described it as “The Dirty Dozen with supervillains” and while it will be connected to the rest of the DC universe – Ben Affleck will appear as Batman – it is not expected to tie into the larger Justice League plot.
Hopefully indicating the film has turned out well, a sequel is already in development, with Ayer and Smith set to return.
