A couple of days back, I revealed that there were rumors that Blackberry plans to end the Phone manufacturing part of the business, as it turns out, the rumors were true. The company revealed in its latest financial report (via MobileSyrup) that they will be exiting the hardware development game.
In the words of John Chen, Blackberry’s CEO
“The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners. This allows us to reduce capital requirements and enhance return on invested capital.”
Now, you should bear in mind that this doesn’t mean that Blackberry is completely exiting the phone business. What this means is that future Blackberry phones will only be Blackberry phones by name only — aka, they plan to outsource it to other companies who have licensed the brand. Similar to what Google does with its Nexus devices.
Of course, this also means that we might not be seeing some of the signature designs (For example, the QWERTY keyboard) that make Blackberry phones what it is, but this is way better than giving up entirely!
In other words, Blackberry came, saw, and outsourced!
