A black Oxford student has been branded a ‘racist bully’ after he refused to tip a waitress for being white.
Ashleigh Schultz, 24, was reduced to tears when Ntokozo Qwabe wrote on his bill, ‘We will give tip when you return the land’ at a restaurant in Cape Town.
Qwabe later bragged on Facebook that he, and a friend, made the woman cry ‘typical white tears’, leaving him ‘unable to stop smiling because something so black and wonderful had happened’.
He wrote: ‘She sees the note and starts shaking. It is irrelevant whether you personally have land/wealth or you don’t. Go to your fellow white people and mobilise for them to give us the land back.’
The student is a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University, where he receives money from the Rhodes estate to study.
The incident at Obz Cafe in the Western Cape, South Africa, last week, has since sparked fury online.
People have condemned the man, a Rhodes scholar, labelling him an ‘idiot and ‘intolerant’.
On social media, close friends of Schultz said the waitress has been going through a ‘tough time’ after her mother was diagnosed with cancer.
In a bid to raise her spirit, online campaigners have decided to ‘tip the waitress’ and have collected more than £2,000.
