Zimbabwe to make Chinese yuan legal currency after Beijing cancels debts

Zimbabwe has announced that it will make the Chinese yuan legal tender after Beijing confirmed it would cancel $40m in debts. “They [China] said they are cancelling our debts that are maturing this year and we are in the process of finalising the debt instruments and calculating the debts,” minister Patrick Chinamasa said in a statement. Chinamasa also announced that Zimbabwe will officially make the Chinese yuan legal tender as it seeks to increase trade with Beijing. (more…)

Baghdad holds Miss Iraq pageant for the first time in 43 years

When I first heard of these, I thought to myself, hmmm no bikini section? At least there is a development in freedom! (CNN)When Shaima Qasim was crowned Miss Iraq this weekend, she not only triumphed over the other women in the competition but over threats against her life. The pageant was the first to be held in Baghdad in 43 years. "Iraq needed this," pageant director Ahmed Leith said. "The situation is weak here, and we wanted to celebrate this the same way other countries like Lebanon and others do. To have a sense of normalcy." (more…)

Miss Universe catastrophe! Miss Germany slams Miss Philippines – We didn’t vote for her

  Following the the controversy surrounding the winner of the Miss Universe pageant after host Steve Harvey's slip-up by crowning Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez-Arévalo  winner by mistake. After making history for having the highest-selling first week album in music history, with 3.38 million copies of her album, 25, sold ,Adele still can't understand why Americans have gone mad for her tracks. She tells Time "It's a bit ridiculous. I'm not even from America, "Maybe they think I'm related to the Queen.  Americans are obsessed with the royal family."
