Ugandan gays, facing attacks, hope pope will speak out on their behalf during Africa visit

Uganda has been seen as a bastion of anti-gay sentiment since 2013, when it sought to toughen penalties, with some lawmakers pushing for the death penalty or life in prison for some actions involving gay sex. The law was overturned on procedural grounds, but not before U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry compared it to anti-Semitic legislation in Nazi Germany. Other Western donors were outraged. UNIJOS Begs ASUU To Call Off Strike

The Registrar of the University of Jos, Mr. Jilli Dandam, on Thursday, appealed to all members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) to suspend its strike in the varsity as 90 per cent of the demands have been met. Dandam explained that as soon as the University got the notice of the strike action, they underwent the necessary steps to make sure all issues were rectified.
