Nigeria’s National Assembly Wants To Make Users Pay 15% More For Telecommunication Services

Welcome to the motherland of Africa, Nigeria! People so much love this country that they dream of leaving it one day! lol  With never ending fuel queues and ever increasing dollar exchange rate and the heat that came from nowhere (Lagosians how the heat? lol).

And now this, the National Assembly’s plans to introduce a new Electronic Communications Services Tax. Senator Ali Ndume, the same allegedly behind that social media bill debacle is said to have sponsored the bill, which has gone through first reading in both chambers of the National Assembly.

If passed, it means that both service providers and end users will pay 9-15 percent (that’s on paper but in reality it will be triple!) more taxes/tariffs for electronic communication services like voice calls, SMS, MMS, internet data (OTT), and even Television viewing. And it’s not limited to those; the bill specifies “communication through the use of wire, radio, optical or electro-magnetic transmission emissions or receiving system”.
