Republican U.S. presidential candidate John Kasich speaks to members of the media before speaking at the California GOP convention in Burlingame, California

John Kasich is ending his campaign for the GOP presidential nomination, according to two people familiar with the matter, leaving Donald Trump as the sole Republican standing and making him the party’s presumptive nominee.

Kasich is expected to announce he is suspending his campaign on Wednesday. The Ohio governor had vowed to stay in the race all the way until the Republican convention this summer, despite losing every contest except his home state. But after Ted Cruz dropped out of the race in the wake of Trump’s commanding victory in Tuesday’s Indiana primary, Kasich had little hope of blocking Trump from winning the delegates needed to clinch a majority before the convention.
