The much-anticipated seventh installment of the Resident Evil franchise has finally been announced today at E3, marking the return of the series from a more action-oriented place to its purely horror roots.

The trailer above certainly echoes that, and while it doesn’t reveal anything in terms of plot, there’s no shortage of dilapidated environs, creepy crawlies, and decomposing hunks of mystery meat scattered throughout the torch-lit scenes. Capcom hopes the clean slate of Resident Evil 7 will please long-time fans of the series, following the less-than-stellar reviews of Resident Evil 6 despite it shipping five million copies. Look for Resident Evil 7 to release early next year on January 24.
